Helen Andelin 2005 |
November 2005 Brief Biography of Helen Berry Andelin Helen was born in Mesa, Arizona in 1920. She was the youngest daughter in a family of seven - four girls and three boys. Her father was a dentist. Later the family moved to Phoenix where she attended Phoenix Union High School. When she was eighteen she attended Brigham Young University where she met her future husband Aubrey Andelin. After they were married they resided in Los Angeles where Aubrey attended dental school at the University of Southern California and served a term in the Air Force at Castle Air Force Base in Merced. They are the parents of eight children, four sons and four daughters. |
Helen's dedication to improving marriages began in 1962 in Fresno, California where she taught marriage classes to women, created from her own resources. Her unadvertised classes grew rapidly, from a small group of eight to a large audience of 170, in a very short time. Women poured into her classes from all walks of life - all religions, all races and cultures. The most amazing thing about her teachings, however, was the lives it was changing. Marriages that had become dull and uninteresting became romantic again, and those in deep trouble were revived and became tender and loving. Her teachings offered solutions and saved many marriages from divorce. The project she entered into with a light heart, became a project she now viewed with soberness.
With the success of her marriage classes she conceived the idea of writing her book, "Fascinating Womanhood" The first printing of her book was an immediate sell out. The classes continued to grow and soon other women requested permission to teach the Fascinating Womanhood course. This created a greater demand for her book, which in turn created a demand in the bookstores. Her husband formed a small publishing company to meet this need. In nine years sales totaled near 500,000 copies in hardback. In 1974 Helen signed a contract with Bantam Books to publish the book in paperback for mass-market distribution.
In l975 Bantam Books sent the Andelins on extensive publicity trips, where they were interviewed by over 300 major newspapers, T.V. and radio stations. In the first six months the book sold over 500,000 copies in the mass-market paperback and has continued to sell well. To date "Fascinating Womanhood" has sold over three million copies. Its success, however, is not measured so much by the number of copies sold as the lives it has changed. The impact it has had on marriages has been phenomenal, as evidenced by the thousands of testimonials, many which have been included in her book. Mrs. Andelin has also lectured before many diverse groups, especially university and church groups.
Interest in the book and classes has continued, not only in America but also in some foreign countries. It has been translated into Spanish, Portuguese, French, Japanese and recently Korean and Russian. The classes have also been taught in some foreign countries. She has made personal appearances in Brazil, Japan, Australia and the Philippines. She has also written two other books, "The Fascinating Girl," A book to single women and "All About Raising children." Her husband, Aubrey is the author of the well-known book to men, "Man of Steel and Velvet."

Through "Fascinating Womanhood" there is hope of a new generation of women "happy, feminine, and cherished." This would invoke a new generation of men "masculine and chivalrous." This claim is expressed in the author's own words: "I am more convinced than ever that these teachings are true, and that this knowledge is the most urgently needed knowledge in the world today. This claim is not unreasonable. A loving marriage is the foundation of a happy family, and a happy family is the foundation of a stable society. Most of the problems in this world stem from troubled homes. If we are to have peace in the world, we must begin at home."
"Fascinating Womanhood" is a guide to a happy marriage. It is not a book of rules to be memorized and applied, then put aside when they become tiresome. Rather, it forever changes the way a woman thinks, the way she views herself and her husband. It is a way that is new to most women. The experiences of "Fascinating Womanhood" indicate that women are the same everywhere, regardless of race, religion or culture. Women the world over want to be loved and cherished, cared for and treasured. When they apply these teachings results are earth shaking. Mrs. Andelin is currently writing a monthly advice column on the Internet, called Marriage, The Fascinating Way, which includes questions and answers, success stories and online classes with discussions.
Comments from Grateful Students
Reprint from a 1978 Fascinating Womanhood Newsletter: A wonderful example of devoted love is in the marriage of Helen and Peter Cushing, a British actor who played the villain in Star Wars. He said of his wife, Helen in a recent article in the National Inquirer. "I've lost the only joy in my life - my wife Helen who passed away six years ago. Without Helen life has no meaning for me. I'm simply killing time until that wonderful day when we're together again. I miss her terribly. My loss is so unbearable that I don't want to go on living. They say time heals but sadly for me time only makes things worse. I see only one end to my personal trauma - the day I am reunited with her. Nothing could replace Helen in my life. There could never be anyone else."

We will forward this information to your online teacher and she will get in touch with you and give you instructions for logging into the class. You may pay by credit card or check..
Unfortunately, due to family requirements, Sandra Schindler had to resign from teaching one of our online classes. She is an excellent teacher who has given years of service to the Fascinating Womanhood program, influencing countless lives for good. We sincerely hope this "time out" is only temporary and that she will join us again in the near future.
When one more student enrolls, Lucy Vander Ploog will begin her online class of 20 students. This will likely be in the next day or so. Those already enrolled in her class are participating in the online discussions. Lucy is an authorized FW teacher with a dedication to living the teachings, a willingness to teach it to others and the support of her husband in both.
I am sorry to report that Cynthia Berenger will be unable to serve as an online Fascinating Womanhood teacher at this time. She is scheduled for surgery in December, which will limit her time spent outside her home. In addition, her husband's recent decision to return to military service requires Cynthia's full understanding and support, which she has given willingly. This has been a self-sacrificing decision for Cynthia, but a wise one. She has truly made her husband and his career Number One.
Live Fascinating Womanhood Classes
We continue to encourage live Fascinating Womanhood classes wherever possible, especially in churches, educational institutions and outreach programs. We also encourage women to teach classes in their homes or to form study groups in appropriate places. There is nothing to take the place of live classes where the teacher and her students can personally communicate with each other, and follow up with a monthly graduate meeting. My daughter Kristine has recently taught two FW classes in Virginia and reports that success has been as it has always been through the years, astounding and dramatic.
If you are interested in teaching a FW class I can give you suggestions on how to get started and make the classes grow in your area. To be a successful teacher, however, you must take it seriously and set aside the time and energy to make it successful. A FW teacher must have 1) A conviction of the teachings, 2) Success in living it. 3) Time to prepare and give a well thought out lesson. It is a most wonderful experience to teach a FW class - to see women come to class with signs of distress in their faces and see them transformed into expressions of happiness and hope. By teaching these principles you will be part of a worldwide movement with unselfish and heartfelt goals.

Speaking of rewards for teaching FW, I would like to quote from a letter I just received from one of our authorized teachers in North Pole, Alaska. "I just want to thank you SO MUCH for allowing me to be an authorized teacher!! I love teaching live classes and am learning so very much from them myself. It is so good for these women to have these live classes, to share their insights and experiences and to have such essential and needed contact with other women who seek to be better wives, mothers and women. I can't possibly thank you enough for allowing me to teach your beautiful teachings and your personal interest in your teachers and what you have done for my life as a woman. May God pour down His blessings upon you."
News Brief from Russia
Fascinating Womanhood continues to have success in Russia. Our teacher there reports: "The book has tremendous success in Russia. Even unbelievers buy it with great pleasure. At the end of September I will preach in Germany. I will teach one FW class and tell about Fascinating Womanhood. God bless you for this important part of your life. Love, Vera Tsys."

I would like to introduce our new online teacher, Cynthia Berenger. She is not new, however to “Fascinating Womanhood.” She first heard of FW when she was in Santa Barbara visiting a cousin and overheard a woman criticizing “Fascinating Womanhood.” She also attended a FW class in Provo, Utah in 1994 and has taught live classes where she lives in Sacramento, California. She has the full support of her husband to teach this online class. Her husband, James was somewhat cynical of women until he met Cynthia. The other day while playing with his toddler he looked over at Cynthia and said, “I can’t believe that there is a man on earth as happy as I am.”
